Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone in PR

One thing I have learned over the years is to never be afraid to step out of my comfort zone to succeed. I have faced many uncomfortable circumstances in life where I have wanted to give up, but I would not be where I am today without the willingness to embrace new experiences. Many people do not like change, but I would argue that the continually evolving communications field demands a flexible mindset from its PR professionals.

Starting college, I was convinced that I wanted to be a physician assistant. With several family members working in healthcare, I did not see myself in any other profession. I quickly realized I was in the wrong major when I started taking the major-specific classes, so I knew I had to reevaluate my future. Since I did not have other potential plans, trying to find a new major was a big step out of my comfort zone.

While it sounds irrational now, I changed my major to PR with very little knowledge about the field. I knew I would be working closely with people, building relationships and writing, but that was the extent of my knowledge about PR. Although I did not know many of the key aspects of PR, I am fortunate to have found a major where I now thrive.

Since changing my major to PR, I have continued to face challenges that have prompted me to step out of my comfort zone. I have joined clubs, accepted leadership roles and taken classes that have pushed me to become a better PR student, and I am certain that any temporary discomfort will be worth the future reward. Professors and future employers appreciate individuals who are flexible and eager to accomplish tasks, especially in the dynamic field of PR.

Although it is easy to avoid discomfort, it is an inevitable part of life. PR students and professionals should learn to embrace the discomfort and take it as an opportunity to enrich their capabilities. Feeling uncomfortable does not always mean you are in the wrong place. Quite often, discomfort gives you a chance to grow.
